As a great meal, this is a side dish for parties and barbecues. However you decide to serve it, make sure you get a big helping before it’s gone!

One of the many delicious recipes that we now make was inspired by when we lived with my parents while building our house. This Chopped Asian Salad is one of them.

We lived with my parents for a while, almost over a year ago, while our home was being built. And that is when I was introduced to the best-bagged salad. My mom bought this Asian Chopped Salad from King Soopers, our local Kroger store. And I fell in love with it, like somewhat obsessed.

Over the summer, I ate this at least 5 times a week because it was so easy to take to the pool and mix it all together. Light, crunchy and filling – it became a to-go-to meal for me.

I had yet to try and recreate this salad; why? I have no idea. But my sister and I the other week were trying to make dinner, and I just threw this together, added some grilled teriyaki chicken breast, and viola, one of my favorite salads was recreated and not even intentionally. I love it when things like that happen, don’t you?

Ingredients for the Salad

  • Coleslaw mix
  • Diced carrots
  • Diced celery
  • Chow mein crackers
  • Chopped green onions
  • Chopped fresh cilantro
  • Cooked chicken

For the chicken, I like to marinate two large chicken breasts in teriyaki sauce and grill them. Or, you can use shredded rotisserie chicken and toss it in the sauce.

Ingredients for the Dressing

I used my Sweet Ginger Chili Lime Dressing from another Asian salad on my blog. My hubby loves this dressing. And really, what is not to love about it? It is sweet and is a perfect balance to the cabbage and cilantro. You can also add some heat to it easily if you are looking for a kick.

It’s worth making your dressing from scratch – here’s what you’ll need:

  • Finely chopped ginger
  • Finely chopped garlic
  • Lime juice
  • Low-sodium soy sauce
  • Toasted sesame oil
  • Rice wine vinegar
  • Chili sauce

How Do You Make Asian Salad?

  • Cut up chicken into cubes.
  • Cut up all the vegetables.
  • Add coleslaw mix, diced carrots, celery, green onions, cilantro, and top with chicken in a large mixing bowl.
  • To make the dressing, mix all the ingredients in a large mason jar, or any type of jar with lid.
  • Combine all of the ingredients and shake to combine, use immediately or store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  • Be sure to shake up before you use it.
  • Drizzle dressing over the salad and toss to combine.
  • Add chow mein noodles {crackers} and toss again.
  • Serve immediately.

Make It Ahead

This is a great make-ahead salad!

Combine everything but the dressing and the chow mein noodles in a large bowl. Keep it in the refrigerator and it will last for several days.

When you’re ready to serve it, just add the dressing and chow mein noodles and toss it all together!

I love it when accidental meals like this one come together for an amazing meal. This will become a new to-go-to weekly meal during the spring and summer and it just looks gorgeous sitting on the table. I love it.

Cheers to accidental recipes and sisters who help you create them. XOXO San

    1. I made this salad tonight. It was delicious and so beautiful. The dressing is really yummy.

I marinated my chicken breasts in soy sauce because I didn’t have any teriyaki sauce and it turned out well.

FWIW, since I said in my above comment that “there’s no way this would take only 20 min to prepare,” I thought I’d time myself to get an accurate read on the actual time to put this salad together. I didn’t count marinating or grilling the chicken. I only counted the specific instructions given after he chicken was grilled. It took me 45 minutes to make the salad and dressing.

  1. Could you please tell what kind of chili sauce you use in this recipe??? I found just plain chili sauce, hot chili sauce, and sweet chili sauce at the grocery store. Was not sure which one to get. Thnx in advance!!

      1. Thanks Julie! The brand I’ve seen is La Choy, labeled chow mein noodles. They come in a can ready to use for topping. Hope you enjoy!

  2. Is the chili sauce called for in the dressing recipe an Asian garlic chili sauce or a more traditional tomato based chili sauce? This recipe looks delicious so I would like to try it soon!

    1. I use the chili sauce from the store in the Oriental aisle, so the Asian one – not tomato base.

    1. Hi Marilyn, you can use coconut aminos in place of the low sodium soy sauce. It should not affect the taste! I hope you’re able to enjoy the salad.

  3. I can’t find the “sweet” part of the Sweet chili lime dressing. Is there some sugar missing or does it just come out sweet somehow with the other ingredients? It looks delicious by the way!

  4. This was such a perfectly crisp and refreshing salad; exactly what I was looking for and packed with flavor! Looking forward to enjoying this again sometime this week!

  5. After reading the comments I still have no idea what kind of Chili Sauce to use as there are a variety in the Asian section of my food store; Thai chili sauce, sweet chili sauce, and Tomato chili sauce (which I read …. was a “no”, but nothing labeled just chili sauce. I’m going with sweet chili sauce because I don’t see any other ingredients in the dressing that would make it sweet.

    1. The sweet chili sauce is absolutely correct! I’ve updated the post to make that more clear as there are a lot of chili sauces out there. We usually just use the Kroger brand but you can use whichever you find.
