Triple Chocolate Baked Cake Donuts - a Devil's Food Cake Donut, glazed with a chocolate ganache and topped off with mini-chocolate chips.

I love chocolate. Specifically any chocolate drink or donut. I have two favorite types of chocolate donuts, the Starbucks Devil’s Food Cake Donut {swoon} and King Soopers’ Chocolate Glaze Donut {my sisters guilty pleasure as well}.

I think that my love for donuts comes from one of my favorite childhood memories. Every Sunday after mass, we would head down to the church basement and eat donuts with all of our family friends. Oh, they were the best donuts from our local Daylight Donuts {which sadly closed down about 15 years ago}. My favorite Sunday of the month would be the Sunday that my parents would sign us up to serve the donuts & juice. We thought we were big time. The best part of serving the donuts was that we were the first to pick which donut we wanted AND we didn’t have to wait in line.

Now years later, my kids have fond memories of donuts as well, but it doesn’t have to do with church. Instead, it has to do with their Papa. Every family get-together, my dad brings Papa Donuts. Papa Donuts are those small little Hostess donuts – the chocolate and powdered sugar ones – you know which ones I am talking about. He has them available basically all the time for the kiddos. And over the years the chocolate donuts have been declared Papa’s and the powdered sugar ones Nana’s, I don’t remember exactly how that came about, but none the less, the kids love Papa & his famous donuts.

I plan to create donut memories for my kids and future grandkids. Starting with these Triple Chocolate Baked Cake Donuts and I can’t wait to see what kind of memories we create eating these together on Sunday mornings. XOXO San

How do you make Triple Chocolate Baked Cake Donuts?

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Prepare your donut pan by spraying with cooking spray, set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown and white sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until mixed together. In a separate large mixing bowl, whisk together milk, egg, canola oil, and vanilla.
  • Beat the dry ingredients with the milk mixture until the batter is well combined and smooth.
  • Pour batter into a large Ziploc bag, snip off a tiny section of the corner, and “pipe” the batter about 2/3 full into the donut pan. Place in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 9-11 minutes.
  • Remove donuts from oven and set pan on cooling rack. After a few minutes remove donuts from pan and let them completely cool.

Frosting

  • In a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water combine butter, chocolate chips, and honey. Stir until completely melted and well incorporated.
  • Once ganache is done and donuts are cool, dip the tops of the donuts into the glaze and turn over, back onto the cooling rack ganache side up and immediately top with mini chocolate chips. Allow glaze to harden, 15-20 minutes or like our family, serve right away… yum!
