So my family’s new New Year’s Eve tradition is Asian food. This New Year’s, we baked up enough homemade sesame chicken, spring rolls and crab wontons to feed an army—seriously. My kids love sesame chicken. We usually have to order six or seven orders of it when we do takeout, just to satisfy our five kids.

Our children loved it. That is, they loved the spring rolls and sesame chicken. But, like most kids who haven’t tried foods, they had already convinced themselves that they didn’t like crab—mostly because of how it looks. And I had issues with how I cooked it, deep-frying it in oil.

This inspired me to come up with a healthier and less greasy version that my kids would love. I’ve always loved taking our favorite fried foods and creating newer, healthier versions that still taste great and are easier to clean up. What better way to get them to love it than add probably their favorite food in the world: chicken. I kept what I love about traditional wontons—a creamy filling—and tried to improve what often disappoints me, mainly the lack of filling flavor and greasy, unevenly cooked wontons. This recipe doesn’t disappoint.

By using PAM Cooking Spray, the flavor of the sesame, sriracha chicken filling shined, while cleanup was a breeze. Its versatility allowed for perfectly browned chicken and cookware, countertop and stove that took seconds to wipe up. This saved calories and time. And since my time is better spent playing basketball (although my 7-year-old recently asked if I forgot all my skills in my old age); reading with my kids; chauffeuring my kids to dance, orchestra, and Science Olympiad; or helping out with homework, I love finding ways to make my cooking easier and more efficient.

There are very few meals in which I don’t use it. And for these baked chicken wontons, I would normally add more sriracha to give it a kick, but this was for the kids, so I mellowed it down. But don’t be afraid to heat it up for those spice lovers in your life, and add your favorite sweet-and-sour or teriyaki sauce for dipping.

How do you make Baked Chicken Wontons?

Spray a medium skillet with PAM Cooking Spray and add chicken; season with salt and pepper to taste.

Place skillet over medium-high heat and cook 2 to 3 minutes; spray skillet again with PAM Cooking Spray and turn chicken over. Continue to turn chicken every 2 to 3 minutes until chicken is thoroughly cooked and becomes a golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove chicken from the skillet and cool. Once cool, roughly chop chicken and set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl, stir together and combine cream cheese, shallots, garlic, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and sriracha. Once chicken has cooled and is chopped, stir it into the cream cheese mixture. Season with salt and pepper as needed.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly oil a large baking sheet using PAM Cooking Spray. In a small bowl, add in egg and 1 teaspoon of water, whisk until frothy, and set aside.

Assemble wontons: Lay out wrappers on your work surface, then spoon about 1 tablespoon of cream-cheese mixture into the center (I used a small cookie dough scooper). Then, using your fingers (I use my middle and pointer fingers together), rub the edges of the wrappers with egg/water mixture. Pull up two sides and pinch in the center; bring up the other two sides, creating an “X,” and seal all the edges together by pinching them. Place wonton on the prepared pan and repeat with remaining wontons and filling.

Placing the wontons into a single layer on the prepared pan, place in the oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp. NOTE: Be sure to check about 4 to 5 minutes into cooking time; you don’t want to overcook these.

Serve immediately and devour.

*Cooking time of the chicken may vary depending on how thick your chicken is sliced into the chicken tenders.
